SOVA Community Food and Resource Program: Organization Offers Food Assistance to the Neighborhood

The economic recession has been catastrophic to many of our neighbors in Beverlywood and surrounding communities. As a result, there are a staggering number of residents who do not have a reliable food supply.

SOVA 300x179 SOVA Community Food and Resource Program: Organization Offers Food Assistance to the Neighborhood“Current estimates are that 1 in 6 residents of Los Angeles County are food insecure.” What is even more astounding is that “50% of those seeking food assistance, work full-time jobs.” However, thanks to the presence of the JFS/SOVA Community Food and Resource Program, many of our neighbors are receiving a steady supply of food. “SOVA”, which is Hebrew for “eat and be satisfied,” is a nonsectarian program of Jewish Family Service. For the past two years, the SOVA food pantry and the Hamilton High School learning garden have been working together to bring fresh organic produce to SOVA clients.

Being much more than a food pantry, SOVA accepts anyone, regardless of race, religion or creed, and offers a wide range of services which include legal advocacy, job and nutrition counseling, case management, food stamp enrollment and assistance with utility bills.

  • They provide referrals to shelters, free medical services, veteran’s services, immigration services, financial aid, free dental and vision care, drug and alcohol rehab programs, clothing and furniture resources, senior services and childcare.
  • The center also features a Children’s Corner, where children can enjoy books while waiting, and then select a few books to take home to create libraries of their own.

Eligibility for SOVA’s free grocery distribution is determined by family size and household income. On your first visit you must bring a photo ID for each household member and birth certificates for minor children.

The westside pantry is located at 8846 West Pico Blvd., one half block west of Robertson Boulevard on the south side of the street.

  • Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 10am to 1:30 pm, and the first and third Sundays of every month from 9am to noon.
  • They are closed on Jewish holidays, so telephone ahead to make certain that they are open (310) 288-0286.

Our community is blessed to have this resource in our own backyard. To nurture and support SOVA, become a volunteer and/ or a donor. Volunteers are at the heart of SOVA’s services. There are two categories of volunteers: Core Volunteers committed to a regular four-hour shift each week, and Occasional Volunteers, who can work on a flexible schedule and can include students earning community service credits. Information regarding donations may be directed to Diane Linder at (818) 988-7682 x 110 and to volunteer, phone Felice Resnick x 118.
